This Year’s Schedule

A History of
Manito Park

June 24, 2023 from 11-12
South Hill Library
Led by Sally Quirk

History is a story, with any one aspect dependent on what came before. Thus, we start our Manito Park story with a brief but long-range view of the history of Spokane. We’ll cover the first river residents, the arrival of later immigrants and gradual moves uphill, and then we’ll expand all the way up the South Hill to the (misspelled) Manito Park. We’ll share tales of speculators, entrepreneurs, and headstrong superintendents. We’ll explore widely held myths and learn some rarely known facts. Come join in the story and listen carefully for the myth that may just win you the Manito Myth prize.

Appreciating the Evolution of Spokane’s Japanese Garden

July 22, 2023 from 11-12
Nishinomiya Tsutokawa Japanese Garden
Led by Sally Quirk

Starting with pencil and paper in hand, you’ll be invited to take drawing notes on a general understanding of various Japanese garden designs, and then specifically apply those ideas to your personal drawing of Spokane’s Japanese garden. This is a fun understanding of both the meandering history of our garden and the many generous people who contributed to it. No worries, we don’t share or collect drawings- no artistic talent needed! When afterwards you walk into our garden, likely will spot many features you’d previously missed.

Please bring a comfy chair and dress for the weather; we will meet in the gravel lot outside the Japanese gardens.

Time to Get Prepared for Winter

Sept 16, 2023 from 11-12
South Hill Library
Led by Marilyn Lloyd, Master Gardener

Join Master Gardener Marilyn Lloyd to learn how to save yourself from a headache this spring by preparing your garden properly for winter. She will guide us through cleaning and prepping vegetable and perennial beds, lawn, trees and shrubs, soil care, composting, and even caring for yard tools, hoses, and clay pots. A Master Gardener fact sheet covering winterizing will be available to all participants!

The Friends of Manito’s adult lectures are free and open to the public, but registration is required.

You can RSVP by emailing tfm@thefriendsofmanito.org or calling us at 509-456-8038.
